Handmade candles cost more because more goes into them. A commercially made candle is optimised for shelf life, shipping durability, and margin — which usually means paraffin wax, synthetic fragrance, and a wick that is sized for the container rather than tuned for how the wax actually burns.

• Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct; soy, beeswax, and coconut wax are plant or animal-derived and burn cleaner.
• Synthetic fragrance can include phthalates; natural fragrance oils and essential oils avoid this.
• Hand-pouring in small batches means each candle gets the right fragrance load (typically 6 to 12% in handmade vs 3 to 5% in mass-produced).
• Wick sizing matters: a wick too small causes tunnelling; too large causes soot and a too-strong throw.

When you light a soy candle in a small room compared to a paraffin one, you notice the absence of soot and the purity of the scent almost instantly. We use these same natural ingredients in our other products as well.

Scent is the fastest way to change how a space feels, and different notes do genuinely different things to how you experience a room.

For relaxation

Lavender, chamomile, sandalwood, and white tea calm the nervous system. Best for bedrooms and wind downs. Avoid heavy sweet or spicy scents here.

For a romantic evening

Warm, skin-close scents: vanilla, amber, rose, jasmine, oud. These make a space feel intimate rather than fresh. Light the candle 20 minutes before the moment.

For everyday home

Fresh, clean, or green scents: eucalyptus, lemon, mint, cedarwood, bamboo. These read as "clean" to guests without being overwhelming.

A candle does two jobs in a room: it fills the space with scent and it fills the visual frame with warmth. The light from a flame is the only truly warm, living light source in a modern home.

• Vessel design matters: ceramic feels artisan, glass feels minimal, concrete feels modern industrial.
• Grouping candles in odd numbers (three or five) creates more visual interest than pairs.
• Height variation: mix a tall taper with a shorter jar candle in the same tonal family.
• Candles on a dining table change the whole experience of eating — this is the single highest-impact placement in any home.

Candles are one of the few gifts that almost never miss. A well-made handmade candle communicates that the giver actually thought about it rather than grabbing something generic.

• Housewarming: a candle for the home is a gesture of warmth — woody or earthy scents work well here.
• Dashain / Tihar: gifting natural, locally made products has real cultural resonance.
• Self-care gift: pair with a natural soap bar for a complete self-care gift.

Handmade candles using natural wax and fragrance oils are generally safer than commercial paraffin candles, but any open flame needs basic respect.

Safe burning rules:

1. Always burn on a heat-resistant surface.
2. Keep the wick trimmed to 5mm before each burn.
3. Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time.
4. Keep away from drafts — a flickering flame produces more soot.
5. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
